CREVALE WETLANDS RESTORATION PROJECT

Wetlands3-484

We're always working hard to ensure our farms have minimal impact on the environment, and we're always looking for new initiatives.

In collaboration with Environment Canterbury and our local community, Deer Genetics NZ are beginning a restoration project to enhance the biodiversity values in a historic wetland situated on our property.

Wetlands 4-190We understand the relationship between good farm management practices and the environment.

This wetland restoration project is an exciting new challenge for us, through which we hope will encourage other farmers in New Zealand to increase their protection towards our native flora and fauna.

Wetlands 5-969-665

How we will achieve this restoration:

  • Weed control (of willow, pine, gorse, monkey musk and blackberry) will be implemented to help native species to establish and dominate the site and contribute to providing good quality habitat to our native fauna.
  • Restoration planting - We are planting eco-sourced indigenous species in areas where natural regeneration is compromised by competition with weeds.
  • Fencing to keep stock out of the area will reduce exposed earth and buffer run-off from forestry harvesting when this occurs, indirectly increasing our water quality in the surrounding catchments.

Extensive native plantings around our waterways have also been undertaken throughout our properties.
We want to ensure clean waterways, assist in regeneration of natural habitat and wildlife, provide browse along fence lines for our deer, and minimize the impact we have on our environment.

We're working hard to ensure our farms have minimal impact on the environment and we're always looking for new initiatives.
Our new recycling program setup in 2015 ensures our farm plastic waste goes to the right place, where it will get recycled into high quality items able to be used again and again in the farming industry.

We prefer Plasback Recycle bins, made entirely from recycled plastic.

native seedlings2We also understand the connection between the health of stock, their food and the environment.

We use where we can, natural based fertilisers including lime, fish and seaweed.

About 30% of our land is put into new and improved pasture each year, along with our 'Rocket Fuel' specialty pastures, which includes chicory, plantain, various red & white clovers and brassicas.

Extensive native plantings around waterways have been undertaken and are continuing, to ensure clean waterways, assist in regeneration of natural habitat and wildlife, and provide browse along fence lines.

In 2014 we hosted the first Deer Industry Land and Environment Planning (LEP) course.  A large project we have completed is the removal of approx 300 acres of established gorse (a noxious weed in New Zealand). This ongoing investment has brought this land area back to prime usage.

Eco-planting of several thousand native trees and shrubs along fenced off water-ways are growing well, and more plantings are underway.

This state-of-the-art Electric Forklift is cleaner for the environment, fast efficient and cleaner for us. Quiet as a mouse, the forklift runs on electricity and is fume free, great for working indoors as we often do.

Firstly thanks for your hospitality and organisation of the'Deer Genetics' field day. I found it a fantastic event to be able to view all the top stags with their magnificent trophy heads... It gives us ordinary farmers a look at what is possible and makes us realise that with not a lot of capital cost and outlay we can access the very best genetics...
